In short : the nose , a detector of disease?

Diseases have an odor , and the human nose is able to detect . In any case that suggests a preliminary study by a Swedish team . So if you do not feel well, so trust your sense of smell !

You find that the breath of your partner is different this morning , or that his body odor is stronger ? It could be that your nose alert about his health . A study by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm (Sweden ) shows that one of the first ways to detect a disease is to trust his sense of smell . It decelerated infection even at an early stage of the disease . These findings are published in the journal Psychological Science.

The idea of this research came from an empirical observation : certain diseases can cause very specific odors. For example , people with diabetes can have bad breath and smell acetone or sour apples. To test their hypothesis , the scientists injected volunteers saline or a solution containing lipopolysaccharide ( LPS) , toxins can activate the immune response. Through this, the researchers wanted to mimic the appearance of a disease. They asked all participants to wear a tight t-shirt for four hours to more easily harvest their sweat.

Their findings show that people who received the injection of LPS showed larger than other temperature peaks , confirming the activation of the immune system. They also feel differently? To find out, the researchers turned to another group of individuals to analyze the samples perspiration odor on clothing. In the end, t -shirts worn by people LPS group were classified as less pleasant to feel that others. In other words, these results suggest that the human nose can detect a disease in perspiration . But probably worse than our canine friends , able to smell cancer .
