Drugs and their dangers : what I keep in my medicine cabinet ?

We all have in our medicine cabinet analgesics and anti -inflammatories, not to mention all the drugs accumulated rate of flu and other gastro ... Some of which are now kept under strict surveillance by the AFSSAPS ! The French Agency for Sanitary Safety warns consumers against certain products closely monitored , the list is available on its website. For health reasons , sorting between good and bad products is required.
First step: I learn !
AFSSAPS ( French Agency for Sanitary Safety of Health Products ) regularly issues warnings against certain drugs. It is not necessarily considered dangerous drugs not AFSSAPS , but they are nevertheless under enhanced surveillance to determine if their side effects may affect their use.

Anti- inflammatory drugs such as Ketum and Nexen and their generics, have been placed under close surveillance , as well as Uvesterol D and CosmoFer , vitamin supplements and sometimes prescribed for newborns or children iron. Recently , vaccines against seasonal influenza 2010-2011 , against the H1N1 virus or hepatitis B or against HPV ( Gardasil and Cervarix ) have been added to the list of drugs under surveillance .

Analgesics such as Di- Antalvic or Propofan were withdrawn from sale since March 2011, so be careful if left in your cupboard .

To find out which drugs are under enhanced surveillance, subject to a risk management plan or those that have been withdrawn from the market , you can see the list on this site AFSSAPS .

Step Two: I sort !
Stamp lonely on a plate , base cough syrup , dressing abandoned ... If you do not regularly sort through our medicine cabinet, it quickly tends to overflow. Or keep all medications may lead to self- prescription and have serious health consequences .

All prescription drugs if they are not all consumed , must be reported to a pharmacist to be recycled. Even if your symptoms seem to be the same as in a previous illness, better consult a doctor rather than using leftover drugs, which may well not be suitable. Also remember to check the expiration dates of your medications , so do not keep unfit for consumption substances.

Finally , keep only the drugs that are in their original packaging, instructions included. These two elements allow you to have information on the composition of the drug and its dosage ( which may differ according to age, sex, weight ... ), but also all possible side effects or cons -indications ! Even drugs used regularly as Tylenol can be eaten along with others, hence the importance of having the manual handy !

Practice: How long can I keep my medicine ?

Solid and semi-solid tablets can be consumed until the expiration date stated on the notice , provided they are kept in their original individual packaging. Warning: it is dangerous to consume medications are unpacked , as it is then you can not identify . And what you thought was an ordinary stamp of paracetamol may therefore be dangerous ...

Creams, ointments or gels can be stored for six months ( for pots ) at one year (for tubes), in terms that they are hermetically sealed and stored away from sources of heat and light . If you find that the product turns to yellow or brown , or begins to harden, discard immediately.

Drops or nasal sprays or mouthwashes ( throat , ed ) does maintain that the processing time , due to their contact with mucous membranes contaminate . Reuse post could lead to reinfection.

Syrups can be stored up to two months if kept away from any source of light and heat , or in the fridge if indicated . If your syrup before that time changes consistency (thickening , grainy ... ) is that it is unfit for consumption.By Laetitia Reboulleau
